George Washington Wins West Virginia Class AAA State Championship

George Washington, 2014 DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships Boys B Division Champion, claimed their second straight West Virginia Class AAA State Championships over the weekend. “It was challenging, very challenging,” said George Washington coach Chris Luckett. The title was the 16th all-time for the Patriots.

George Washington, who was up just one point after the first day of play, battled their way to the top despite having to withdraw from the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles draws after senior Zack Koenig suffered severe dehydration during his singles semifinal. The Patriots dominated the remaining draw claiming state titles at No. 3 singles, by Nick Koenig, and a pair of doubles state titles by Nick Koenig & Thomas McIntosh and Ryan Mullins and Brent Horswell. The Patriots also got state runner-up honors by Furman signee Ryan Massinople at No. 1 singles and Chip Sweeney at No. 4 singles.

Patriots Coach Chris Luckett said, “They know how to win big points. These kids have been playing since they were 4 years old, probably. When they’re playing that much tennis and they’re all best friends, that makes it easier in communicating and working in a doubles match.”

Fellow DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championship participant, Huntington, finished as State Runner-up.
